American Airlines swung to a loss in the first quarter, but its forecast for the current period surpassed analysts' estimates, sending shares roughly 5% higher Thursday. American reiterated its forecast to earn between $2.25 and $3.25 per share for the full year. American said it expects second-quarter capacity to be up 7% to 9%, and unit revenues to fall 1% to 3% from last year. Similar to Southwest , United and Alaska , American is affected by Boeing's latest quality control and safety crises. Adjusting for one-time items, including costs associated with new labor contracts, American lost $226 million, or 34 cents per share.

American Airlines said Monday that 80% of its revenue this year will come from loyalty program members and passengers in premium cabins like business class, up from 70% in 2017. American and other carriers have poured billions of dollars into new cabins, lounges and onboard upgrades to cater to high-spending travelers. American's rival Delta Air Lines has repeatedly said that premium revenue growth has become a bigger share of its overall sales and is growing faster than ticket sales in the coach cabin. American earlier on Monday said it was ordering 260 new Boeing , Airbus and Embraer planes to revamp its fleet and that it would retrofit older Airbus planes to increase the size of their first-class cabins. Flight delays and cancellations continued to mar thousands of Fourth of July travelers on Friday, with United Airlines passengers bearing the brunt of the problems. United Airlines has fared the worst with disruptions, with half of its mainline flights arriving late during that six-day period amounting to average delays of 106 minutes, according to FlightAware data. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called United out for the flight disruptions, saying the airline's disruptions were "elevated but moving in the right direction." United said late Thursday that it expected cancellations and delays to continue to improve into the holiday weekend.
